History
Lake Norden is a small town in northeastern South Dakota established in 1907. The lake to the northeast of town was named Lake Norden by Iver C. Gilbertson who filed a claim in 1878. It was named from a song he loved so well, "Norden er et soskenlog" (The north is a sibling community). Mr. Gilbertson operated the Nora Post Office from 1882 to 1888 just north of the present town. The South Dakota Central Railway built a track from Sioux Falls to Watertown, and in October 1907 when it came through here, Lake Norden was established. The nearby establishments of Poinsett (1878-1908) five miles east, and Dolph (1894-1908) three miles west, relocated many of their buildings to the new town of Lake Norden.
